Befriend yourself :How to be self aware? A guide

In order to be our best selves, it’s important to love and befriend ourselves. This means having high self-esteem and being aware of who we are. When we know ourselves, we can be kinder to ourselves and make better choices for our happiness.

How?

1. Get to know yourself. What are your values? What do you enjoy doing? What makes you happy? When you know what you stand for and what brings you joy, it’s easier to make choices that align with those things.

2. Be accepting of who you are. We all have flaws and that’s okay! Learning to accept ourselves as we are is an important step in self-love.

3. Be kind to yourself. Just as you would be with a friend, treat yourself kindly. This means speaking kindly to yourself, forgiving yourself when you make mistakes, and being patient with yourself as you grow and learn.

4. Practice self-care. Taking care of our physical and emotional needs is essential for our wellbeing. Make sure to schedule in time for activities that relax and rejuvenate you.

5. Set boundaries. It’s important to know our limits and set boundaries accordingly. This means saying no when we need to, setting healthy boundaries with others, and taking care of ourselves first.

By following these steps, we can learn to love and befriend ourselves, leading to a happier, healthier life.

why?

Self-love and self-acceptance are important for our mental and emotional health. When we love and accept ourselves, we are more likely to make choices that are good for us. We also tend to be happier and more fulfilled when we act in accordance with our values. Finally, setting boundaries is crucial for taking care of ourselves. When we know our limits and stick to them, we protect our physical and emotional wellbeing.

What?

Self awareness is a great tool to use in order to befriend yourself. Why? Because when you are self aware, you are able to see yourself more objectively. This means that you can be more forgiving and understanding towards yourself- two key ingredients in the recipe for self love.

Self awareness also allows you to catch negative thoughts and behaviours before they do too much damage to your self esteem. If you can learn to recognise when you’re being hard on yourself, you can then start to change the way you think and feel about yourself for the better.

So how do you become more self aware? One way is to keep a journal and track your thoughts and feelings on a regular basis. This will help you to identify any patterns in your thinking and behaviour, and then you can start to work on changing them.

Another way to increase self awareness is to meditate or do some other form of mindfulness practice. Mindfulness helps us to focus on the present moment and become more aware of our thoughts and feelings as they arise. This can be a helpful way to learn to accept ourselves just as we are.

It is ok to say NO:

It’s important to know our limits and set boundaries accordingly. This means saying no when we need to, setting healthy boundaries with others, and taking care of ourselves first.

Sometimes we can feel like we have to say yes to everything that comes our way, but this is not healthy for us. Learning to say no is an important part of self-care. When we say no to things that we don’t want to do or that are not good for us, we make room for more things that we do want to do and that are good for us.

Saying no can be hard, but it gets easier with practice. Start by saying no to small things, like invitations to events that you don’t really want to go to. Then, work up to saying no to bigger things, like taking on too much at work or saying yes to every request from friends and family. Remember, you don’t have to explain yourself when you say no. You can just say that you’re not interested or that you don’t have the time.

It is also important to set boundaries with others. This means knowing what you are and are not comfortable with, and then communicating this to the people in your life. For example, if you don’t want to be hugged without consent, make sure to tell people this. If someone does cross your boundaries, it’s ok to speak up and assert yourself.

Finally, one of the most important things we can do for ourselves is to take care of our own needs first. This means putting ourselves first, even if it means saying no to others. It might feel selfish at first, but taking care of ourselves is crucial for our wellbeing. When we do things that make us happy and nourish our bodies and minds, we are better able to show up for the people in our lives.

So, if you want to learn to love and accept yourself more, start by befriending yourself. Be self-aware, set boundaries, and take care of your own needs. These things will help you to create a foundation of self-love that you can build on.

Me Time:

One of the best things we can do for ourselves is to make time for ‘me time’. This means taking some time out of our busy schedules to do things that we enjoy, that relax and rejuvenate us.

It is important to find activities that we can do on our own that make us feel good. This could be anything from reading, going for walks in nature, listening to music, or practicing yoga. It’s also important to make sure that we have time in our lives for just goofing off and doing nothing at all!

Making time for me time doesn’t have to be complicated. Just start by setting aside 30 minutes each day to do something that you enjoy. Then, gradually increase this amount of time as you are able. Remember, the goal is to relax and recharge, so don’t put pressure on yourself to ‘achieve’ anything during this time. Just let go and enjoy!

Final Thoughts:

Learning to love and accept ourselves is a journey that takes time and effort. But it is so worth it! When we befriend ourselves, we become more self-aware and learn to set boundaries. We also make time for things that nourish our bodies and minds. These things create a foundation of self-love that we can build on. So start today by taking some small steps towards befriending yourself. Be patient with yourself, be kind, and keep going!
